Dr. Julie Schell is the Executive Director of Extended and Executive Education for the School of Design and Creative Technologies at The University of Texas at Austin, where she is also an Assistant Professor of Practice in both the School of Design and the College of Education. She is an expert in the psychology of human learning and in the pedagogy of design thinking. She has published and spoken nationally and internationally on the teaching and learning of design thinking. Dr. Schell has worked with several Fortune 500 companies including AT&T, Southwest Airlines, and Charles Schwab to learn and increase the uptake of design thinking using state of the art learning science. She is the creator of Think Before You Design Think™️, a popular introductory human-centered design course she first launched at AT&T in 2018. Dr. Schell teaches graduate courses at The University of Texas at Austin on design thinking, technology, innovation, and human learning.
Dr. Schell is an award-winning education scholar with 25 years of experience behind her. Dr. Schell has held positions at the nation’s top research universities, including Yale, Stanford, Columbia, and Harvard. Before joining The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Schell received her doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University and completed a four-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Mazur Group at Harvard University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In 2014, Teachers College, Columbia University identified her as an Early Riser in Higher Education for her original contributions to the field. In 2009, her dissertation was awarded Dissertation of the Year from the higher education division of the American Educational Research Association.
A prominent, sought-after speaker and consultant on learning, Dr. Schell has worked on learning and design initiatives with thousands of national and international audiences. She has led design and learning projects on site in Aruba, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Dominican Republic, Germany and throughout the United States. Dr. Schell has also designed and implemented learning innovation projects online for universities in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and South Africa.

She won the Dissertation of the Year Award from the American Educational Research Association, Higher and Postsecondary Division: Venturing Toward Better Teaching: STEM Professors’ Efforts to Improve their Introductory Undergraduate Pedagogy at Major Research Universities.
